Nathan Green

Opening Reception: Friday, February 21, 2014, 6-8pm

Exhibition runs through March 29, 2014.

In his fifth solo presentation with Art Palace, Nathan Green further explores the formal and structural qualities of abstract painting. By colliding tropes of modern abstraction with traditional crafting techniques and common construction materials, Green’s work playfully re-examines the act and history of painting. The works in Building Pictures collapse painting, sculpture, and installation into singular hybrid forms that pay homage to rich histories, while aiming to add to the language of abstraction and forge a new painterly vocabulary.
Most recently, Nathan Green exhibited work in the Contemporary Arts Museum, Houston (Outside the Lines). In 2012, he completed the Artist in Residency program at Central Trak (Dallas, TX,) and has shown work at the Austin Museum of Art, Subliminal Projects (Los Angeles), and LVL3 (Chicago). As a founding member of Okay Mountain collective, Green has exhibited at Freight & Volume (New York, NY), Prospect 1.5 (New Orleans, LA), University of Houston’s Blaffer Museum and DeCordova Sculpture Park (Lincoln, MA). Green lives and works in Dallas, Texas and is Assistant Curator of Education at the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth.

NATHAN GREEN
FILL THE SKY

May 20 – July 2, 2011

Nathan Green’s work explores the visual language and structural qualities of abstract painting. By combining the tropes of modern abstraction with contemporary craft techniques and common construction methods, Green creates idiosyncratic works that evade categorization and blur the boundaries of their medium. Inherent in all of Green’s work is a palpable sense of playfulness, experimentation, and a curiosity that becomes the guiding force on a search for the ecstatic.

About the Artist:
As a founding member of the Okay Mountain Collective, Nathan Green has recently presented new works at Freight & Volume, New York; Prospect 1.5 New Orleans, University of Houston’s Blaffer Gallery and the McNay Museum in San Antonio, Texas and Pulse Miami (Pulse Prize Winner). Most recently Green’s solo work has been featured in the New Art in Austin: 15 to Watch exhibition at the Austin Museum of Art, and The Texas Biennial.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY MOON

May 8 – June 17, 2009

Please join us Friday, May 8th from 8-10 PM as Art Palace presents Happy Birthday Moon, a solo exhibition featuring new paintings, sculptures, and drawings by Nathan Green. Nathan Green’s work is best described as a search for the ecstatic. His vibrant paintings depict radiant visions of unrealistic and impossible situations. Mundane moments are transformed into fantastical spectacles with an unusual simultaneity of sarcasm, joy, naivety, and cynicism; all with the aims of an elevation and mystification of everyday life.

About the artist:
Nathan Green received his BFA from the University of Texas in 2004.  He has recently participated in artist in residency programs at I Park (CT), Byrdecliffe Arts Colony (NY), Vermont Studio Center (VT), and Prairie Center of the Arts (IL).  Nathan’s work has recently been exhibited at the Aqua Hotel Fair in Miami, and Dunn and Brown Contemporary in Dallas.  He is a founding member of Okay Mountain and lives and works in Austin.

NATHAN GREEN AND
ERIC GIBBONS
LASERS IN THE JUNGLE

September 1 – October 6, 2007

War, the diamond trade, killer bees, traffic jams, global warming, killer asteroids, pandemics, cancer, violent crime, religious fanaticism, poverty, tsunamis, governmental corruption, genital herpes, bird flu, identity theft, torture. Nathan Green’s work strives for an absurdity equal to that which is reflected in the above list, but in the opposite direction. His is a search for the ecstatic, where vivid visions of unrealistic and impossible situations present a world overflowing with delight and glee, almost to a burden. Where Green’s paintings use a lexicon that includes children’s drawings, nature, drug culture and utopian architecture, Eric Gibbons has chosen to focus on one figure whose oeuvre is defined by earnestness and seeming effortless ponderings on love, betrayal, desire, aging and God: Paul Simon. Gibbon’s portraits of Simon function as a means to process the poetry and beauty of the songwriter’s music. Green’s and Gibbon’s worlds sometimes converge thematically, and at other times stylistically, but both worlds always profess a steady devotion to the idea of miracle and wonder. The title of this two-person exhibition, Lasers in the Jungle, at Art Palace is taken from Simon’s lyrics to the song Boy in a Bubble.
