ERIC ZIMMERMAN

ELEGY
FOR LEFT HAND
ALONE

Opening Reception: Friday, April 10th, 2015, 6-8pm
Exhibition runs through May 23, 2015.

Eric Zimmerman’s fourth solo exhibition with Art Palace, Elegy for Left Hand Alone is an exhibition of art objects that take their lead from the idea of artifacts, evidence, and symbols. The title is derived from a section of Don DeLillo’s 1997 novel Underworld, which itself is a non-linear story about the byproducts of history and the figures who occupy it. Zimmerman’s new drawings, sculpture, zine, and sound piece contained in the exhibition are references to the human place within the world and our effect upon it. Present in this new work is an oblique questioning of the way in which we construct knowledge and a direct interrogation of our need for explanation, quantification, and understanding. A subversion of these needs is sought by placing a range of images and objects within context and proximity of one another in order to establish a series of open-ended and leading propositions. Sometimes these are political, other times poetic, often something else entirely, even something we’d rather forget. Surfing imagery reminds us of the rejection of the forces of Capitalism and an embrace of the doper slacker. In a new sound work Zimmerman has taken the recordings made from hydrophones placed beneath the Antarctic sea ice and filled the air of the gallery space with them. This is the sound of the sea and of transformation, the latter also suggested in a group of paper mache basalt boulders modeled after Joseph Beuys’ 1983 work, The End of the Twentieth Century. Ink drawings of meteorites remind us of the scale of the universe and our endeavor to seek ‘proof’ through science. #000000 Magic #FFFFFF Noise is a new zine containing two poems and photographs about our protagonists existence in the fever dream that is the Bayou City. A small drawing of an Aurignacian stone tool sets up a time-scale and whispers to us from an ancestral history we will never truly know and move further away from each passing second.

Eric Zimmerman received his MFA from the University of Texas at Austin. His work is currently on view as part of the group exhibition Urban Ecologies at the Galveston Art Center, and is part of the permanent collection of the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. Zimmerman has previously exhibited at Horton Gallery, (New York, NY,), the Re Institute (New York, NY,) and Seraphin Gallery (Philadelphia, PA,). His solo museum presentations include exhibitions at Austin Museum of Art (Austin, TX,) Texas State University (San Marcos, TX,) the and The Old Jail Art Center (Albany, TX.) ERIC ZIMMERMAN
& EMILIE HALPERN
COSMOS

May 8 – June 26, 2010

Art Palace is pleased to present new work by Los Angeles based artist Emilie Halpern and Austin artist Eric Zimmerman in their first two-person exhibition of their work. Entitled Cosmos, the exhibition pairs Halpern’s striking photographs and sculpture with Zimmerman’s painstakingly rendered graphite drawings, etchings and sculpture. A collaborative work utilizes each of the artists’ voices as they read from Carl Sagan’s text Pale Blue Dot. The alternating sentence loop endlessly through a pair of Califone tape recorders placed side by side on a circular gold foil blanket.

Emilie Halpern’s photographs draw on a diverse group of subjects—sea coral, the cosmos, lovebirds, Yoko Ono, and a dense forest—to create contemplative images that reveal a sense of longing, melancholy, and ultimately wonder. Halpern’s photographs of mysterious and romantic phenomena highlight the artist’s interest in magic, love, human relationships and the beauty that lies beneath scientific facts. The exhibition will also feature two new sculptural objects by Halpern.

About the Artist:
Born in Paris, Emilie Halpern has since relocated to Los Angeles, where she received her MFA from Art Center College of Design in 2002. Her work has been shown in group exhibitions that include ACME, Los Angeles; Casey Kaplan, New York; Kate MacGarry, London; Jousse Enterprise, Paris; The Breeder, Athens; Kunstraum Innsbruck, Austria. She has had solo projects with The Santa Barbara Contemporary Arts Forum, Medium Galerie in St. Barthelemy, French West Indies, and The Project Row Houses in Houston, Texas. She currently has a solo exhibition on view at Light & Wire Gallery, Los Angeles. Her upcoming exhibitions include PortugalArte10, Lisbon, Portugal and Pepin Moore Gallery, Los Angeles.

Eric Zimmerman’s new drawings, along with five new etchings and two hardcover books, continue to explore the themes of social and political Utopias, astronomy, time, individual and communal senses of place, the notion of appropriated source material, re-contextualization, and the poetic capacity of materials and histories when they are combined within new frameworks. The work as a whole, including the books and audio programs, expands the ideas of doubling/pairing present within the exhibition, the notions of Socialist Utopia’s, the layered qualities of history, and the subtle connections between often seemingly unrelated materials and subjects.
Born in Cleveland, Ohio, Eric Zimmerman now lives and works in Austin, Texas. In 2005 he received his MFA from the University of Texas at Austin and now teaches at St. Edwards University in Austin, Texas. He has had solo shows at Art Palace, Austin Texas and Slugfest Gallery, Austin, Texas. Zimmerman ahs also participated in group shows at Capricious Gallery, New York, New York; Fort Worth Contemporary Arts, Fort Worth, Texas; Diverse Works, Houston, Texas; Austin Museum of Art, Austin, Texas and the Galveston Arts Center, Galveston, Texas among others. In 2008 he was the recipient of The Brown Foundation full fellowship to The Vermont Studio Center.

ATLAS

March 1- April 9, 2008

Please join us Saturday, March 1st (8-10pm) as we celebrate Eric Zimmerman’sAtlas. This most recent body of work investigates the methods we use to structure space, from the unknown, ideal, and unattainable, to the concrete and apparently real. His graphite drawings, deal with the ideas of here and there and what occurs in the intermediary space. His work moves between the two and three-dimensional, then and now: real and imagined.
Zimmerman’s work represents spaces that embody our efforts to structure and image a larger environment, and our attempt at fixing a constantly fluctuating series of states. His imagery derives from topographical maps, visionary architecture, astronomical illustration, observation, along with text, and natural phenomena such as icebergs, glaciers, and forests.

SIMPLON PASS

September 9 – October 7, 2006

Art Palace Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition of new drawings by Eric Zimmerman entitled Simplon Pass. In his most recent work Zimmerman draws on images of exhibition architecture, exemplified by buildings such as The Crystal Palace, maps, and the humid atmospheres of J.M.W Turner (from which the exhibition’s title is derived), in order to establish a pictorial representation that is inconsistent with our traditional perceptions of space, of place, and of forms. Created on a plastic ground, passages of amorphous marker and graphite forms are derived from areas of topographic maps, shadows created by various landforms, and images of the sky combined to creates a sense of atmosphere and light. Marker allows color to appears transparent and to be free from the constraints of paint. Utopian structures like The Crystal Palace are nostalgic architectural symbols for the promise of industry, human invention, and general optimism. Within their massive iron and glass skeletons these buildings contained a stable sense of the industrial reality of the period, but a sense of fantasy also inheres that exceeds their historical reality and questions their apparent stability.
