OUTER LIMITS

by Eric Gibbons

ART PALACE presents Outer Limits, new paintings by Austin-based artist Eric Gibbons. Drawing upon icons of good and evil, Gibbons weaves the characters of Star Wars: Princess Leia, Darth Vadar and company, into psychologically-charged portraits and narratives. These paintings challenge this dichotomy to complicate archetypes and to explore the emotional undercurrents driving human nature and relationships. “The Force” becomes a metaphor for Gibbon’s artistic practice. Gibbons writes about this series: “They depict moments of doubt, shame and guilt. The paintings humanize heroes as well as villains. They show tough guys crying and late night bouts of demonic possession.”

Eric Gibbons’ paintings have been exhibited in solo and group exhibitions throughout the United States. His work has most recently been featured in New American Painting, ArtLies and Voices of Art. He has received numerous awards and honors including a first place award from the Dutchess County Art Association in New York (selected by Tina Kukielski, Curator, Whitney Museum of American Art) and the Martin and Elizabeth Walling-Turner Award for Painting.
